Did you know...

...that less than 1% of the Americans that die each year, die in conditions that make their organs eligible to use for donation. That means that most of you amazing people that have signed up to be organ donors... Won't actually end up being organ donors. But that shouldn't discourage you, it is why we need to make sure we get the facts out there and encourage everyone to be an organ donor! You could be someone's miracle!

Did you know?

The doctors that work to save your life when you are in the hospital are NOT the same doctors that remove your organs and operate on transplant patients. I visited my cousin the other day and was shocked when I asked him if he was an organ donor and he answered no, with the reason that he wants the doctors to save him and not think about letting him die to profit from harvesting his organs.... Obviously my cousin has not been paying attention. Let's think about this for a minute. First, majority of hospitals do not do transplants... It's a pretty specialized field. Second, a doctor never wants to lose a patient. You know that whole, "first do no harm" thing, they could lose their license. But really what would an emergency room doctor have to benefit from letting you die? They would make more money on you being alive since they would be able to do more operations on you, because once you are gone UNOS takes over and the transplant team handles the deceased precious gifts. And no, there is no finders fee, and most of the time you are not in the same hospital as the transplant patient so it's not like the doctor knows who's organs are going to who. So, did i make my case? I really couldn't believe that someone in my own family was still so ignorant to the facts of donation.... You know if T.V and media is where you get your "facts" you will be shocked to know that we don't come out of transplants looking like they do on TV either. Hehehe.

DID YOU KNOW...

1 in 4 Americans has a fatty liver that
can lead to cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver

Check your numbers:

Further testing is needed if your
ALT liver enzyme levels are OVER
30 IU/L for men

A simple blood test can help you
take better care of your liver.

A HEALTHY LIVER IS UP TO YOU

Did you know...

That in some circumstances, your next of kin can go against your wishes to donate your organs when you die? This is why it is very important to tell your loved ones about your decision to be an Organ Donor. (Besides the fact that you are spreading the word, potentially saving even more lives!)

By donating your organs after you die, you can save or improve as many as 50 lives. And many families say that knowing their loved one helped save other lives helped them cope with their loss.

Did you know...

Living donor liver transplantation has two major advantages over deceased-donor transplantation. First, there is an improved survival rate for the adult transplant recipients who received living-donor livers over deceased-donor livers. Please see charts below. Secondly, the wait for transplantation can be greatly reduced.

One Year Liver Transplant Survival Rate (1/1/06 – 12/31/09)

Recipient Survival with Deceased-Donor liver – 86.5%
Recipient Survival with Living-Donor liver - 96.1%
Three Year Liver Transplant Survival Rate (7/1/04 – 12/31/06)

Patient Survival with Deceased-Donor liver - 73.3%
Patient Survival with Living-Donor liver - 91.6%

Did you know...

... that the liver performs numerous functions for the body: converting nutrients derived from food into essential blood components, storing vitamins and minerals, regulating blood clotting, producing proteins and enzymes, maintaining hormone balances, and metabolizing and detoxifying substances that would otherwise be harmful to the body. The liver makes factors that help the human immune system fight infection, removes bacteria from the blood, and makes bile, which is essential for digestion.
